Karachi: Aziz Ahmed shares insights on Pakistan’s leather industry, Eid hide processing & the urgent need for tax reforms to strengthen exports.
Mr. Aziz stated that the industry has so far processed around 5 to 6 million hides, including cow, goat, sheep, and camel skins, showing 8 to 10% growth compared to last year. “Leather collected during Qurbani season plays an energetic role in Pakistan’s export economy,” he noted.
Aziz explained the multi stage processing of raw hides, from salting to vegetable tanning and wet blue conversion, using imported chemicals & skilled labor. “Pakistani leather is globally preferred for its soft grain and stability, that’s why brands like Zara and Gucci work with Pakistani exporters,”.
He also appreciated Sindh government for funding PKR 300 million to support for infrastructure in Korangi Industrial Area Karachi, a key hub for leather production. “Their response was well timed and impactful,” he added.
However, Mr. Aziz stated worry over the withdrawal of the 1% final tax regime and increased duties on imported chemicals, saying these steps are hurting an industry that provides thousands of jobs and earns foreign exchange.
“We request the federal government to review these measures. Let exporters focus on production and growth, not paperwork and disadvantages,” he said, adding that policy constancy is essential to keep Pakistan reasonable in the global leather market.
