Veteran Bollywood Actor Asrani Dies at 84 After Prolonged Illness

Legendary actor Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as just Asrani in Bollywood but who has been one of the most popular actors on Hindi screen for decades -- died Wednesday night after a prolonged illness. The actor died at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu, around 4 PM, his manager Babubhai Thiba said.

Asrani was cremated in the evening at Shastri Nagar Crematorium, Santacruz, with close friends and family and people from film fraternity.

Sholay actor Asrani was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan and his death is the end of an era for Indian cinema, to say the least comedy genre! Famed for his precise timing, expressive face and complete lack of inhibition, he was one of the most beloved and enduring comic actors in Bollywood.

Asrani worked in hundreds of films during his 50-year-plus career, and brought a rare combination of humour and humanity to all his characters. He was already a star in the 1970s and ’80s, with roles that people still remember and quote today. From being the legendary jailer in Sholay to numerous funny characters- Asrani was the epitome of quirky genius in Hindi cinema.

Apart from films, Asrani was well appreciated for his modesty and work ethics. His extensive partnerships with all-time great actors and filmmakers cemented him as one of the business’s most cherished and dependable players.

Asrani was recently seen in Kajol’s web series The Trial: Season 2 and played the role of an advocate, thus showing just how much he can transform and slip into any role even till the end of his career.
