Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court to stop misleading video on YouTube using his name, voice and pictures.
As per Indian news media, the petition points out about the increasing abuse of deepfake tech, not only harming actor’s public claims but also endangering in broader ways by spreading misinformation and vileness.
Akshay’s lawyer Senior Advocate Birendra Saraf told the court that such deepfake videos are being circulated thick and fast on social media, which makes it near-impossible to trace and pull it down in time. “Just to clarify, fake or doctored content that people see and pass on in high volumes could put something out of context that causes harm — that gets widely distributed before fact-checking can stop it,” he said.
The plea indications several examples, counting that of a fake movie trailer uploaded in March 2025 which showed actor (AK)Akshay Kumar portraying Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath. Before it was removed, video went viral & had been viewed more than 2 million times on social media platform.
Yet another deepfake video showed the actor making insensitive remarks against Maharishi Valmiki that went viral and even led to protests in many areas, although they were fake as well. There are also reports which claim that the voice can be cloned up for 2019s AI tools like ‘AI Akshay Kumar V2 Voice’ can duplicate his own voice and enable it to generate speeches on just any input of a text.
The plaint is directed against ‘social media platforms, websites and unknown persons’, with a prayer seeking an injunction to prevent them from making any commercial or wrongful use of Akshay Kumar’s name/ identity/ image/ photograph/ voice for any misleading purpose.
Interestingly, a number of other Indian celebrities — such as Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Amitabh Bachchan Hrithik Roshan Karan Johar Asha Bhosle Suniel Shetty — have already sued to protect their images from misuse via deepfake.
